Impressions of a Dutch Expat in Brazil

Also on order in Dutch bookstores

The Book

In this book, I describe my personal experiences of cultural differences while living and working in Brazil. This collection of surprises, misunderstandings, and sometimes hilarious stories reflects that it is almost impossible for a foreigner to grasp the Brazilian spirit.

A work assignment to Brazil formed the basis for the personal stories described in this book. It takes place between 2009 and 2016 against the backdrop of the rise and fall of the Brazilian economy.

Mathilde Scholtes

After graduating in clinical psychology, I worked as a psychologist at the medical faculty of the Free University in Amsterdam. I did scientific research on coping with diabetes and lectured in communication skills. Looking for another challenge, I switched careers and ended up with Fugro, an international company specialized in geological data, not an obvious choice. For more than twenty years, I worked in a “man’s world,” sixteen years of which in executive positions.

My Story

As a child, I was already fascinated by discovering the world. My career decisions were driven by challenges and curiosity about other places. After all, life is much more exciting when working with people in different cultures. The opportunity to live and work in Brazil was a leap of faith to learn more about the unique Brazilian culture.
